Buying a New Home Key Takeaways | Things To Consider When Buying A New House
Ladies and Gentlemen, I have a very important announcement to make.
The Magical Unicorn does not exist. I repeat, the magical unicorn does not exist!
Here is a great quote Neal Stephenson that says
“It is what you don’t expect… that most needs looking for.”
When I first moved to Houston, I was completely stuck with the idea of the house that I wanted. I must have looked at 50 homes but none of them matched my criteria. Or better yet, what I thought was my criteria.
Things I Learned From Buying a Home For The First Time
1. This was not my forever home. After living there for 7 years, we moved to another property.
2. The home can eventually become an investment property. For us, we decided to keep the home which today makes a fabulous rental.
3. Your financial situation will probably change in the next 5 years (hopefully for the better!) so your purchasing power will likely increase as well. And you can upgrade your home!
4. Drop the idea of finding “perfect home.” This doesn’t exist! What truly will make this house a home is what you make out of it. The memories I have of that first property are invaluable.
5. Be realistic about your needs today! The house needs to service your current lifestyle, so focus on what you truly need right now.
6. Replacing a light fixture is very easy. So is paint!
7. Don’t live above your means! I am so glad we stuck to our budget, even though the house wasn’t what I had in mind. We never struggled with the monthly payments and we still got to enjoy life!
