This Houston neighborhood was named after the book Tanglewood Tales written by Nathaniel Hawthorne?  The developer who purchased in 1948 acres of flat grassland named it Tanglewood after his daughter’s favorite title. This is a quiet, family friendly community with decades-old live oaks, winding streets, and original ranch-style homes. It is home to former US Presidents, celebrities, and CEOs. The mile-long granite path that runs down the middle of Tanglewood Road is beloved by its residents. Along the way neighbors and friends enjoy the trail’s broad shade, and teak benches.

Located outside of 610 Loop, north of Galleria Mall, and west of Downtown, Tanglewood is one of the best Houston neighborhoods for land value appreciation. With its central location and easy access to key Houston roads, Tanglewood offers a 20-min commute to Houston major companies at the Energy corridor. Downtown and Galleria are around 10 minutes from the area. Mostly a residential area, homes have spacious and wooded lots. Here you will find home structures with a variety of architectural styles, with oak trees planted on each lot. The neighborhood’s deed restrictions have helped maintain the area’s feel and look. Other good reasons to explore homes in this area are its proximity to job centers, schools, parks, world-class retail centers, and restaurant and entertainment options. Tanglewood real estate has remained among the most expensive in Houston due to its neighborhood’s continued popularity. There are no townhomes in Tanglewood area, however, there are plenty of townhome options available in nearby neighborhoods.  There are no mid- or high-rise condos for sale in this area, but plenty of units are available in the surrounding areas. Several condo buildings are in the Galleria, River Oaks, and Memorial Park, including The Houstonian, Montebello, Astoria, Villa D’Este, Four Leaf Towers, The Mark, Empire Lofts, The Manhattan, Lofts on Post Oak, and The Huntingdon.

There are plenty of fun things to do near the Tanglewood area:

Memorial Park, a municipal park and one of the largest urban parks in the United States, opened in 1924. It covers about 2.2 square miles, mostly inside the 610 Loop. A small portion of land west of the 610 Loop bordered by Woodway Drive and Buffalo Bayou is also part of the park. Among the park’s facilities, it includes the 18-hole Memorial Park Golf Course, Texas’ top-rated municipal golf course. Mountain biking is huge in the park. Bikers are very fond of the trails located in the Bayou Wild, which is the southwest section of Memorial Park. The trails are color coded with maps located at the trailhead signs. The trails are mixed-use and shared with hikers. There are Picnic areas with picnic tables located throughout the park that are available first come, first serve basis unless previously reserved by another party. There are over thirty miles of trails scattered throughout the park for the enjoyment of running, walking and hiking, weather permit. The park also includes a Tennis Center, Volleyball courts, and sports fields for softball, baseball, soccer and flag football.

The Houston Arboretum and Nature Center is a 155-acre nature sanctuary west of downtown Houston. Five miles of walking trails through forest, meadow, and pond habitats offer opportunities to see turtles, frogs and other wildlife. The Nature Center houses a Nature Shop, restrooms, and Discovery Room which includes microscopes, aquariums, and interactive exhibits. Grounds open daily from 7 am to dusk.

Houston Country Club is a highlight of this area. Founded in 1908 by a group of prominent Houston businessmen who were enthusiastic golfers, they sought to create a club that provided first-class golfing.
