An independent city in Houston´s inner loop, West University earned its name due to its proximity to Rice University. It is known for its stately traditional homes. In 1939, residents opposed attempts to be absorbed into the city of Houston; the municipality proudly maintaining its independence ever since. Thanks to its history of zoning codes and private fire and police departments, West U prides itself on giving residents fascinating quality-of-life amenities. Greenway Plaza
First envisioned in the late 1960s by local developer Kenneth L. Schnitzer, Greenway Plaza is a business district located along Interstate 69 (U.S. Highway 59) within the Interstate 610 Loop in southwestern Houston. Only 5 miles west of Downtown and 3 miles east of Uptown, Greenway Plaza has evolved into one of Greater Houston’s largest employment centers, with over 4.4 million square feet of office space on a 52-acre campus.

The City of West University Place Parks and Recreation Department offers an ample variety of parks, activities and programs for all ages throughout their award-winning facilities.
Colonial Park, located at 4130 Byron and measuring 3.16 acres, features two lighted tennis courts, playground equipment, sand volleyball court, concrete walking/jogging and a swimming pool. Spectacular characteristics of the pool are a zero-depth area, a Lilly pad crossing, foam features, a play structure, diving board, and a Rockwall.
Judson Park offers a lighted tennis court, playground equipment, picnic deck, game and picnic tables, BBQ grill, and walking path.
Other parks in the West U area are Wier Park, Huffington Park, Liberty Hill Park, Friends Park, and Jennie Elizabeth Hughes Park.
Recreation Center
The West University Place Recreation Center is the city’s hub for wellness and fitness. You will be greeted by friendly staff and can train with certified instructors in a wide variety of activities such as swimming, dance, and sports. The center offers lessons and physical fitness activities for all ages, from infants to seniors, as well as mental fitness activities. Police Department
The West University Place Police Department is a private West U police service whose mission is to safeguard the lives and property of its residents. West University also has its own private Fire Department. Its purpose is to protect citizens from ravages of fire and other disasters.
